OTTAWA - A senator self-described as a "strange animal" has an odd hobby of buying royal portraits at auctions and donating them to parliament.

Liberal Sen. Serge Joyal, a cabinetminister under Pierre Trudeau, is celebrating his 20th anniversary in the Senate. He is responsible for filling out a collection of British royal portraits in the foyer and populating rooms themed on French monarchy and Indigenous peoples with various works of art.
