Voluntary Organizations, Government Taxation Policy

Hon. Serge Joyal (Secretary of State): Mr. Speaker. I am pleased that the Hon. Member did notice that Canadian voluntary and charity organizations are mentioned in the Speech from the Throne no less than seven times. The Hon. Member will also have noted that the question of determining what organizations could or should benefit from an exemption under the provisions of the Income Tax Act will be referred to a joint committee of the Senate and the House of Commons, which will review this issue, hear representatives from the voluntary sector and suggest to Parliament appropriate initiatives to meet the demands of that sector. I therefore believe we should be confident that this initiative proposed in the Speech from the Throne will do much to meet the representations of the Hon. Member and the voluntary organizations.
